Through my abstract practice, I am striving on a personal level to understand and be open to the unconscious; the myriad of feelings that often present themselves conjunctly, sometimes presenting as confusion, sometimes as elation. Abstract art is my passion and my life; it drives me forward and keeps me energised. By working from my studio in Waihi, New Zealand and also a studio in The Netherlands, I am always challenged and confronted by the visual and cultural differences these two hemispheres offer; a north and south encounter. As a process driven artist, I enjoy experimenting with a combination of paint, ink, graphite, charcoal and thread. My paintwork often embodies a fabric-like quality as it is removed from one surface to another and hand-stitched and/or adhered into place. By balancing both the pure paint element of my works and the almost hand-craft element of my thread-work, I give each component equal merit and meaning without one dominating the other.
