My images draw upon the idea, pioneered by certain modernist artists and their precursors, that art has a language like potential to communicate ideas, which, rather than relying on long verbal explanations, can be deciphered by the audience using their associative and imaginative capacities. That is the use of metaphor and other verbal tropes. “Ut pictura poesis” ( as is painting so is poetry) has a long tradition in art and here I use it to connect to our contemporary social and political landscape and hopefully say something meaningful and truthful about it as informed by a left wing progressive outlook. Being visual, other formal considerations come into play; the architectural qualities of the image, balancing of the various elements, its dynamism and the use of colour for its symbolic, naturalistic associations as well as its aesthetic effects. The intention is to create a visual impact and enhance or intensify the underlying message. The images are created using an image manipulation programme, enlarged and transformed into stencils and sprayed onto a suitable substrate including legal walls around London and Brighton. It is my intention to make art for the general public with the hope of eventually making large scale murals in the future.
